A wild cat a Davie couple say they spotted in their backyard more than a week ago has some residents on edge. Local trapper Robert Leach has set up a cage on the property, hoping to capture the animal. Mayor Judy Paul suspects it may be a bobcat, not a black panther as reported by the resident. "Call it what you want," said Sheldon Friedberg, who called police on Jan. 14 after his wife spotted what she called a black panther pawing at her cat. Friedberg said his wife went outside that night to shoo away what she thought was a black dog. "It wasn't a dog," said Friedberg, who lives in the 6100 block of Southwest 56th Street, northeast of Stirling and Davie Roads. "It had 4-inch fangs. And it's not a bobcat. When it opened its mouth it's like something you see in the movies." Friedberg said the family cat survived the attack. He and his wife had seen the animal before, but thought it was a neighbor's oversized cat, he said. His wife, who appeared recently on a TV news report on WSVN-Ch. 7, declined to comment. "I can tell you this," Friedberg said. "It's a gigantic cat. It's out there. They still haven't caught it." Mark McCarthy, who runs a wildlife sanctuary in The Acreage in Palm Beach County, said he doubts the animal that the Friedbergs say is prowling around their property is a black panther. "A lot of people don't know one cat from another," he said. "People call and tell me they hit a jaguar and I go out and it's a bobcat. Maybe it was a bobcat or cougar and it got in the mud."The mayor also had doubts. "We've got bobcats and they're sometimes dark," Paul said. "We have had coyote sightings out west. Where would a black panther have come from?" Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle had this advice for anyone who spots the animal: Call 911.

RE: Community Boundary Proposal That Could Impact WBHS

The following is an update from Melissa Gleissner…"we dodged a bullet it seems this time at least on the high school concern."

"I attended today's School Board Workshop. The boundary dept. stated that community proposal #26 (that would have impacted WBHS) is not required, as Flanagan HS is no longer slated to be a school considered for boundary changes. Please continue to stay informed, as the timeline process moves forward. Things are still open to change."

Ivanhoe Residents with Children at Silver Trail or West Broward High:

It is again time to react and be informed about certain middle and high school boundary schemes for 2012-13. AGAIN, as a neighborhood, we have been TOO QUIET and have been INACTIVE in our participation !!!!

THIS particular COMMUNITY scheme splits IVANHOE in half, with 181 children at WBHS to Flanagan High. From what I have been told, this particular scenario has had little if ANY input from our Ivanhoe residents. The effected kids are in Ivanhoe Estates, Waterford, Chelsea, Sheridan Hills, Cross Bow and ANY kids EAST of I-75. In addition there is a MIDDLE school scenario that takes all the kids EAST of I-75 to Pioneer vs. Silver Trail.

The INTERESTING thing is just YESTERDAY any public comments have been closed and only yesterday did the South area or West Broward find out about this MAP #26. The very moment they knew, they sent the information. NOTHING has been decided yet, but we AGAIN have been shortchanged in the notification and distribution of these important issues by this school board district and boundary department.

Any resident interested needs to be informed by going to the Broward School District website, under DEPARTMENTS, the SCHOOL BOUNDARIES for the actual information, guidelines on decisions and your particular neighborhoods impact. There you will find TAZ maps, all the different community requests with numbers and the suggestions by residents and the District.

BE INFORMED and make your voice heard to the school board, especially our district member, Patti Good 754-321-2002 and members at large (Robin Bartleman 754-321-2009/ Katherine Leach 754-321-2008). It also appears that Cypress Bay has only one or two maps suggested that could affect them. The next School Board workshop eliminating maps and making suggestions will be on Oct 25th.

Write letters and make phone calls AFTER you get the whole truth and facts. Be persistent… be polite but firm! (Do YOUR homework) Inform Ivanhoe community leaders, parents and everyone you know who has school aged children in Public Schools TODAY!!! This also affects our Hawkes Bluff Elementary children.

2012-13 Boundary Proposals and Community Input

A community member has submitted a school boundary proposal (#26) impacting WBH and it is now shared with the

Broward community from the School Boundaries :

Update: Missing teen found in Plantation 20 hours later. After being questioned by police, boy said he got fed up with the chores and spent the night at a friend's house.  The boy had no history of running away, and the abrubtness of his disappearance lent weight to an abduction theory that had police scrambling.

DAVIE, Fla. -- The family of a missing South Florida teen is making a public plea for help.
